Kebbeh provides encouragement and hope by visiting children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.
From Desperation to Joy
An HIV-positive woman finds hope in the Gospel and now reaches out to others infected with the disease
Kebbeh Kweh, a 30-year-old Liberian mother of two, lost everything when she found out she was HIV-positive.
The children’s father refused to be tested and abandoned the family. Her relatives no longer came to visit and would not share a meal with her kids, ages 12 and 5.
“The first thing I thought when I found out was, ‘Who will take care of my children if something happens to me?’” she said.
In the midst of discouragement and despair, Kebbeh found joy. A Samaritan’s Purse staff member counseled her, shared Scripture, and told of the hope that can be found through Jesus Christ. She also encouraged Kebbeh to use her experience to teach others about the disease.
Kebbeh’s family was enrolled in our orphans and vulnerable children program, which provided school fees, uniforms, supplies, mosquito nets, medical care, a household water filter, and spiritual support. Once her children’s needs were met, Kebbeh enrolled in our HIV/AIDS training course to learn more about the disease and how to encourage those living with the virus.
“After I was trained by Samaritan’s Purse, I visit hospital patients who are losing hope and encourage them,” she said. “I tell them I am HIV positive and share my hope with them.”
Today, Kebbeh visits children and families affected by HIV/AIDS to provide encouragement and to ensure their physical needs are met. She has also joined marches aimed at reducing stigma and discrimination.
“When I tell people I am positive, it makes me feel better,” she said. “I break the silence and it takes a load off of me. I feel free.”
