“God has brought us here,” said church elder Dugur Macol. “Our children will come and remain here and become leaders. So this church is good. We will unite in hand and heart.”
Pan Awac Church is one of the 247 churches that have been constructed by Samaritan’s Purse through its Church Rebuilding Project. Churches that were bombed, burned, and destroyed during Sudan’s brutal civil wars are being rebuilt out of sturdy brick and steel. Volunteers from each local church participate in the building process from the ground up, clearing land, gathering local materials, making hand-packed bricks, and assisting in construction.
Before the dedication ceremony, hundreds of people marched around the building three times in a grand procession, playing handmade instruments and singing praises to God.
When Pastor Alapayo Kuctiel opened the doors, the sanctuary was flooded with worshippers. Every seat was filled; people stood along the walls; and overflow crowds gathered at every open door and window. Hours of spirited worship, praise, and preaching followed, encouraging believers and drawing the lost to Christ.
Rebuilt churches in Pan Awac and other villages are symbols of hope for the future and monuments to courageous believers who were martyred for their faith. During Sudan’s first civil war that spanned the 1960s, a group of five church leaders, led by Pastor Magok Dhuol from Pan Awac, paid the ultimate price for following Jesus.
Even though battles raged around them, Pastor Dhuol and his friends were determined to share the Gospel. They had a special burden for ministering to thousands of people who fled to makeshift camps in the rugged bush country after Islamic militias overran their villages. The five men were bound and placed in front of men with guns. They were all killed.
Tragically, the evangelists were captured by government troops along the trail. The Bibles the men carried confirmed they were Christians. They were also accused of being spies. The five men were bound and placed in front of men with guns. They were all killed.
Every family at the dedication had lost loved ones during the wars, but nothing could destroy the saving faith that drew hundreds to the Pan Awac dedication.
Pastor Kuctiel captured the essence of the celebration, quoting excerpts from Psalm 84: “Oh, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.”
