World Medical Mission, the medical arm of Samaritan’s Purse, places Protestant Christian physicians and dentists for short term assignments at evangelical mission hospitals and clinics around the world.

Anesthesiologist

Mukinge Hospital - Zambia — Mukinge Hospital is a 200-bed referral facility that currently services 100,000 people in the Kasempa and Mufumbwe districts in the Northwestern Province. The hospital has seven inpatient wards, including general medical/surgical (male and female), maternity (1,300 – 1,400 deliveries per year), pediatrics (acute ward and malnutrition ward, TB and eye. There is a busy outpatient department with 160 – 180 patients seen daily. The outpatient department includes general care clinics, as well as clinics for well child care, antenatal care, family planning, tuberculosis, nutrition, surgery, ophthalmology, ART and STD's. There is a physical therapy department offering whirlpool, plaster casting, rehabilitation, prosthesis and leprosy follow-up. There is a pharmacy with basic drug supplies. Community services include family planning, antenatal care, well child care, leprosy, nutrition, ophthalmology care, and HIV/AIDS. The hospital has a full-time community-based AIDS team as well as a mobile and in-house eye program. Average hospital occupancy rate is 95%. Hospital staff includes (2) Zambian general practice physicians and (1) expatriate general surgeon.

Climate: The colder winter season is from May through August and has temperatures averaging 50° - 60° F. The summer season is from September through March and has temperatures averaging 80° - 100° F. The rainy season is from November through April and is usually warm, with temperatures ranging from 63° - 80° F.

Language: English although many patients speak only the local language, Kikaonde.

Charting: English. Translators available for patient interaction.

Surgery: There are (2) operating rooms equipped with a reasonable range of instruments for general, orthopedic, and eye surgery (including an operating microscope). Equipment and supplies include an autoclave, endotracheal tubes, suction and cautery.

Anesthesia: General anesthesia. Equipment includes an autoclave, endotracheal tubes, suction, cautery, stationary and portable x-ray, and basic ultrasound. They have a Glostavent which will draw over gas anesthesia with either isofluorane or halothane.

The anesthesia needs at Mukinge are currently being met by (2) CRNAs. One of them will be going on furlough from July - December 2012 leaving (1) CRNA to cover all the anesthesia needs as well as be on call 24/7. Mukinge will accept volunteers for a minimum three week commitment.

The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission will arrange flights, visas, medical licensing and in-country travel.
